Lanre Adisa : Ark’s man in front of the real

Lanre Adisa, the Managing Director/Chief Creative Officer, Noah’s Ark is a guru in the image-making world, be it in Public Relations, Advertising, Integrated Marketing Communication and media relations. Lanre, who started his career in 1990 as a Trainee Copywriter at MC&A: Saatchi & Saatchi, Lagos, Nigeria and established the creative powerhouse, Noah’s Ark, in 2008, has since rose up the ladder to become an authority.

Lanre has, over the years, deployed his wealth of experience to propel creative initiatives wired to promote Nigerian advertising internationally, in fact he is one of the brains that started the Lagos Advertising & Ideas Festival (LAIF), and subsequently served for over a decade on the Management Board of LAIF Awards.

Lanre’s impeccable profile as an excellent image-maker has seen him as a juror in the African Cristals Festival, 2016, in 2018 he became the first West African to serve on the Cannes Lions jury, in 2019 he was on the jury of the Loeries in South Africa, and as well served as the president of the Heritage jury of the debut Pitcher Awards.

Lanre also founded other successful agencies rendering marketing communications-related services to clients such as Integrated Indigo Limited, a public relations agency, The Red Wolf Company, a digital-first agency and Underdog Productions, a content/audio-visual production company.

In a career spanning 30 years, he has created outstanding work for some of the most notable brands in Nigeria such as Indomie Noodles, MTN, Peak Milk, Three Crowns, Virgin Atlantic and Airtel among others. In 2014, he and his wife launched Labule, a Quick Service Restaurant chain that serves Nigerian delicacies.

Lanre Adisa, a graduate of Linguistics from the prestigious University of Ilorin, once said in an interview granted that “My journey into advertising was not planned. When I was in the university I was interested in creative writing. I was into creative writing, acting, campus journalism and things to do with the arts generally. I envisaged myself doing something that involved writing. When I was serving, I ran into somebody who was in advertising. He told me about agencies, what it means to be a copywriter and stuff like that. I got to meet the Creative Director of MC&A: Saatchi and Saatchi and we got talking. He said he would like to offer me a job. He asked when I would like to start. This was in 1990. I had my last month of service left. I told him I was serving in Ibadan. He said he might not be able to wait that long. So I transferred to Lagos in my last month of service. That was how I got into advertising.”

Once asked how true it is the remark that he is the most creative person in the country, Lanre said “It is the first time I am hearing someone say that. I am not so sure if I can boldly claim that. In all sense of honesty, I cannot. I think that is assuming a whole lot of stuff. I can tell you that I am very passionate about advertising and that will never change. I am not interested in the titles. That is not what matters to me.”

After putting up considerable years in the advertising industry that starting Noah’s Ark after 18 years in the industry said that “Noah’s Ark came about as a result of my inner reflection. I thought our industry could do with a lot more competition in terms of the creative output.”

As Jenkins Alumona resilient wins it

Jenkins Alumona, CEO, Strategic Outcomes Limited, is standing among the giants in the crowded Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) space and has good nose to understanding Nigerian marketing firmament deeply.

Jenkins Alumona, the consummated marketing communication professional, established Strategic Outcomes 15 years ago to approach business operations from a different angle with a focus to principally achieve marketing objectives of clients.

Jenkins is of the view that looking at the rate of growth of the IMC, Ad and PR that “I see an industry that has great potential, has access to great talent but it is tormented by the slow growth of the economy.”

He believes that “a large population like Nigeria should have access to a huge talent pool but the challenge is that we can’t do much if the other aspects of national development are not in place. If those guys in Aba, for instance, have infrastructure such as electricity and make more shirts, distribute successfully and export, that means they will grow and have the need for expansion and also have the need for marketing communication activity. Everything is interlinked, if one thing is not working, others will not work.”

Strategic Outcomes Limited with more than 15 years in Nigeria business space as a company “is a product of a desire to make a contribution to the marketing communication industry and also a desire to fulfill a lifetime goal of empowering others”, Jerkins said, and “I took a bold step to establish the company to approach marketing communication in a different better way. The name of the company is in itself a statement that we desire to achieve outcomes that meet the strategic objectives of our clients.”

While establishing the firm he said one can be as positive as he wishes but there are other variables that affect the plan, and that one can go into anything believing that everything will go well, but you need to be in it with 99% positive mind.

“At the establishment of the company, my mind was to bring different positive approach to doing things. We are always interested in finding solution that will satisfy the objective than the payment for the job. We have retained that core essence to partner with clients across sectors from manufacturing to service industry and the public sector and we continue to provide the best for them.”

Jenkins is of the view that surmounting the obstacles besetting the image-making space said “From a broader perspective, if the economy does not grow and the number of businesses doing the same thing keeps increasing, we will get to a point when growth gets stunted.  Though the economy has started growing now but not at the pace to satisfy players in the economy. Today, the business aspect is obviously not as good as it used to be and secondly, the SMEs are not transiting to medium and big companies. Thirdly, how many SMEs understand or have the need for advertising activity as their businesses are not growing.”

Strategic Outcomes, has the operational mandate to continue to exist, providing  solutions to firms who will also grow, because according to him if the economy does not grow, the IMC sector will not grow, so the firm is wired to assist companies to grow for it to have the opportunity to grow too.

Temitope Jemerigbe The new kid in the bloc

Temitope Jemerigbe, a titan of advertising, with over 20 years’ experience gathered from various top agencies in Nigeria, sitting on several boards championing causes for women empowerment, gender equality, sickle cell advocacy, is the Chief Executive Officer, DKK Nigeria.

Tope, as she is simply called, does not believe in luck or chance, but in deliberate action and strategy to gain result as seen in her philosophy – keep pushing forward.

DKK Nigeria boasts of creating integrated marketing communications solutions that speak to the clients’ audience in a language they understand.

Tope, in her career trajectory, has evolved into an Amazon on the Nigerian Integrated Marketing Communications landscape having built a sterling career that has chalked up great records in all the agencies she worked, particularly her outstanding performance at DKK.

Tope has etched for herself a sterling record while working for various top agencies in Nigeria such as STB McCann, ZK Advertising, Prima Garnet Africa and Dencil Limited, and today she is an icon and a leader with indelible footprints too bold to overlook in the industry.

It is noteworthy to mention that before multi-awards winning Tope assumed as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of DKK in 2012, the agency founded in 1997 was barely struggling to stay afloat due to hard times.

As a game changer, Tope, the cerebral and go-getting Amazon took the daunting task of resuscitating the agency as a partner/shareholder. Her professional intervention paid off as the agency rebounded, expanded the reach of its business beyond the shores of Nigeria through her bold and daring moves. Partnering with GEPetrol, the National Oil Company of Equatorial Guinea, to manage a major project via a through a joint venture actually leverage the crumbling company.

Tope holds a Master’s degree in International Management from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, obtained her first degree in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, and a member of several organizations and currently serves on the Board of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), as the Publicity Secretary.

Tope is also the Vice Chairman for the LAIF Management Board and Chairman of the Committee of Women in Advertising, a position she deploys to championing growth and equal opportunity for women in the industry.

Tope is a recipient of various awards including Female CEO of the Year 2014 and Brand Communicator’s Outstanding Female Creative Advertising Professional of the year, 2020.

She is a member of WISCAR & a member of the Board of Trustees for The LightHouse Network, both organizations focused on empowering women. In both NGOs, Temitope is actively involved, spending her time and resource.

Tope does not believe in luck or chance, but in deliberate action and strategy to gain result – to drive one’s innate ability with focus, no destination is too far.

Heading a firm that understands that to make a wholesome brand every aspect of the IMC must be deployed, dialing-up the necessary service to meet the dynamics of a brief each time and therefore not a surprise to many industry watchers as she makes the list of APCON fellows.

Kayode Olagesin Olaniyi Flies EXMAN kite

As the saying goes that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step” and exactly so it appears with Kayode Olagesin Olaniyi, a consummate gentleman with creative ingenuity who flies higher as APCON Fellow.

While celebrating and appreciating his professional attainments and contributions to the growth of the Nigerian advertising industry, Kayode Olagesin was inducted to the prestigious position as APCON Fellow – a huge, commendable and impactful honour.

Olagesin, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Towncriers Ltd., an experiential marketing company of note that offers brands the rare opportunity to give consumers tangible and memorable experiences by stimulating the five senses of taste, touch, smell, sight and sound.

According to Olagesin, the transitional journey up the ladder to becoming an APCON Fellow is a prestigious one that is only comparable with other renowned professional bodies such as SAN, ICAN and NMA.

“Being a Fellow is like the crowning glory of one’s career in any field. It is something really important to celebrate. People get awarded for so many things but this one coming from the professional body and a regulator is something that is indeed desirable and worthy of achievement,” he said.

Towncriers, as a member of ISES (International Special Events Society), is placed in a unique position to access and harness specialists resources to clients’ advantage. With its unique delivery style to deliver message directly to target consumers, exploring major trends, nuances, languages and terrain, ability to execute schemes anywhere from the highbrow area to the densely populated rural interiors, coupled with the uncommon dexterity to create excitement and memorable activities around the brand to enable high recall of the brand, Towncriers has engraved its name in gold over the years.

Olagesin is one the outspoken Ad professionals that reiterated the need to urgently come up with a new law that would be binding on both the agencies and the multinationals when practitioners under the auspices of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN) advocated for a new law that would be binding on all members on a particular fee that they should charge clients.

When most multinationals that used to pay 15% as agency fees have cut it down to between 7 and 10% while the 60 days within which the contract is signed has been extended to 150 days before payments, Olagesin noted that various moves had been made to reach out to the multinationals in order to come to terms of agreement but they have refused to adhere to the association’s demand.

“We have tried to speak to the multinationals to reach an agreement but the truth is that they don’t want to talk to us. It is high time that we formulate a law that will be binding on us. As long as we don’t have any form of law they will continue to treat us badly.

“It is a buyers’ market and that will continue to determine the terms. We also have event agencies and consultancies that are eating up into our businesses. All these are the challenges that we are facing and we must address them.”
