Meta plugs $5K ‘Breakthrough Bonus’ to attract reels creators

Meta is informing creators from competing social platforms that they could earn “up to” $5,000 in bonuses over three months if they begin posting Reels on Facebook and Instagram.

The initiative, also known as the “Breakthrough Bonus,” began testing earlier this month and provides eligible creators with the ability to earn money from posting videos, photos and text posts by way of the Facebook Content Monetization program.

Meta says that to be eligible for the bonus, creators must be adults based in the U.S. with a notable presence on TikTok or any other “third party social app.” Creators must also have a professional Instagram or Facebook account and not be participating in any other Facebook monetization programs.

Once accepted, creators will be expected to post at least 20 Reels on Facebook and 10 Reels on Instagram per month during the first three months in the program, while also sharing content at least 10 days each month with their followers.

Some TikTok creators who join the initiative will also receive a verified badge, account support, and impersonation protection via a one-year trial of Meta Verified.

A Meta spokesperson also said that Meta plans on signing “content deals” with select TikTok creators in order “to help grow their communities on Instagram and Facebook.”

Meta’s offer to TikTok creators comes just days after TikTok went dark for a number of hours for 170 million users due to a new law passed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Despite President Donald Trump signing an executive order on Monday as a temporary solution to bringing the ByteDance-owned app back online in the region, Meta and other competing social platforms continue to roll out initiatives and features similar to those on TikTok.

For example, over the weekend, Meta introduced a vertically aligned profile image grid on Instagram, extended Reels’ length to three minutes and announced a new TikTok-ified video editing hub.
