Airbus, in collaboration with Air France-KLM Group, Associated Energy Group, LLC, BNP Paribas, Burnham Sterling, Mitsubishi HC Capital Inc., and Qantas Airways Limited, have launched a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) financing fund aimed at accelerating SAF production.
The corporate partners teamed up with investment manager Burnham Sterling Asset Management to establish the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Financing Alliance (SAFFA) investment fund, with Airbus as the Anchor Investor. The combined commitment from the seven partners amounts to approximately $200 million.
Each partner contributes their financial expertise and experience, with the collective goal of boosting SAF availability by primarily investing in mature SAF-producing projects that utilize waste-based feedstocks. Investments will be diversified across various SAF production pathways and regions.
Partners may secure priority contracts for SAF offtakes from the projects SAFFA invests in, ensuring access to sustainable fuel supplies. The fund will focus on SAF eligible for certifications under the RefuelEU Aviation and CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) programs.
SAFFA’s first investment was in Crysalis Biosciences, a company focused on revitalizing U.S. chemical manufacturing with innovative fuel and chemical production technologies. Notably, the company has acquired and renovated the Monarch facility, an ethanol plant in Sauget, Illinois. Having completed upgrades and received environmental authorizations by early 2024, the facility is set to produce low carbon intensity SAF and biochemicals.
