The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) is intensifying its regulatory efforts to promote ethical advertising practices, restore investor trust, and protect consumers from deceptive marketing campaigns. ARCON’s Director-General, Olalekan Fadolapo, announced this during the Advertising Standards Panel stakeholders forum in Lagos.
Fadolapo noted that the digital economy has increased the complexity of advertising regulation, citing concerns about misleading advertisements on social media. “If N1.2tn to N1.5tn is lost to deceptive adverts and shipping fraud, consumers and legitimate businesses pay the price,” he warned.
ARCON is tackling false health claims in AI-generated advertisements and advocating for a collaborative approach to regulation. Fadolapo emphasized that advertising must be legal, decent, honest, and truthful, with all ads requiring vetting and approval by the Advertising Standards Panel.

The Chairman of the Advertising Standards Panel, Emmanuel Agu, reaffirmed ARCON’s statutory responsibility to uphold advertising ethics, ensuring content promotes public interest, fair competition, and Nigeria’s cultural values.
Stakeholders, including Lanre Adisa, Chairman of Heads of Advertising Sectoral Groups, are supporting ARCON’s efforts, recognizing the need for regulation to protect brands, consumers, and the economy amid digital disruption.
ARCON will continue engaging practitioners, media owners, and content creators to ensure Nigerian advertising meets global standards of accountability and professionalism.
