Dove has won the prestigious Media Lions Grand Prix award at the Cannes ad festival for their groundbreaking campaign, “Dove Real Beauty Redefined for the AI Era.” This campaign is a testament to Dove’s ongoing commitment to challenging distorted beauty standards and promoting authenticity in the beauty industry.
The Campaign’s Innovative Approach
The campaign, launched in partnership with Pinterest, invited users to redefine Real Beauty by selecting their own images of women and inner beauty traits like “Brave” or “Creative.” These user-generated choices were then used to create personalized, shareable videos that represented each individual’s unique Real Beauty DNA. By encouraging users to pin these videos to their personal boards, Dove and Pinterest aimed to reshape users’ feeds and retrain Pinterest’s AI algorithm to showcase a wider spectrum of beauty.
A Multi-Channel Effort
The campaign didn’t stop at Pinterest. Dove extended its message through a multi-channel approach, leveraging Out-of-Home (OOH), TV, Print, Social, and Video to reach women and raise awareness about the impact of AI on our perceptions of beauty. This comprehensive strategy helped deliver an impressive 787 million impressions, exceeding the campaign’s initial expectations.

The Impact
The campaign’s impact was significant, with brand lift studies reporting a notable lift in message associations of Dove’s “Real Beauty” values across various platforms, including Pinterest, Amazon Prime, Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Roku. The Real Beauty content on Pinterest reached 27 million people, and women reported a 21.4% higher engagement rate with the custom experience compared to Pinterest benchmarks.
Industry Recognition
Media Lions Jury President Dan Clays praised Dove for its innovative approach, stating, “Dove has embraced the very technology that is distorting the notion of real beauty in today’s media ecosystem and partnered with a platform to not only generate and showcase content for women that elevates a more authentic version of real beauty but also serves as a source of highly impactful media for the brand across multiple channels and in commerce.”
A Continued Commitment to Real Beauty
Dove’s Real Beauty platform has been a cornerstone of the brand’s identity for 20 years, and this campaign is a testament to its ongoing commitment to promoting positive change in the beauty industry. With nearly two dozen Lions awards under its belt, including the Media Grand Prix award two years ago for a campaign protesting a TikTok filter that perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards, Dove continues to push the boundaries of what beauty means and how it is represented in media.
