FCCPC cracks down on “No Return, No Refund” policy, warns Lagos sellers

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has declared the “No Return, No Refund” policy, commonly used by traders, illegal and contrary to Nigerian consumer protection laws.

The commission is warning sellers across Lagos markets that every consumer who buys defective or substandard goods has the right to seek a replacement or a refund.

According to Babatunde Irukera, the Executive Vice Chairman, FCCPC , traders must respect consumers’ rights as “The ‘No Return, No Refund’ policy is illegal and not recognised under Nigerian law, as such, the commission will penalise businesses that violate these regulations.

The FCCPC is educating traders and consumers on their rights and responsibilities through a sensitization campaign in major Lagos markets. Officials are distributing information materials and engaging with traders and shoppers.

Consumers are welcoming the move, with one shopper saying, “It’s about time we have protection. If a product is faulty, we should not be left to bear the loss.” The FCCPC is urging traders to display fair return policies and prioritize customer satisfaction.

Traders found guilty of violating consumer rights can expect penalties. The FCCPC is encouraging consumers to report incidents of denied refunds or product exchanges directly to the commission for prompt intervention.
