The Federal Government (FG) is set to introduce age restrictions for social media usage in Nigeria to protect minors from harmful content and promote responsible digital citizenship. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced this at a stakeholders’ forum, emphasizing the need for regulatory frameworks to address child safety concerns online.

The government plans to work with industry partners, civil society, and international experts to implement effective age-verification technologies, requiring social media companies to ensure only individuals above the stipulated age can create accounts. “The safety of our children online cannot be compromised,” Dr. Tijani stated.
The move mirrors similar measures in the US and UK, and is expected to spark conversations on enforcement and privacy implications in Nigeria. Stakeholder consultations will precede the policy’s implementation, with the FG stressing its commitment to digital inclusion and a safer online environment
