Meta introduces paid channels, promoted content on WhatsApp

Meta is unveiling a set of new monetization tools on WhatsApp, empowering creators, businesses, and organizations to expand their reach and generate revenue through the app’s updates tab. With three key features – Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Adverts in Status – WhatsApp is supporting commercial activity while preserving users’ private messaging experience.

Channel Subscriptions: Users can now pay a monthly fee for exclusive updates from their favorite channels, including news outlets, content creators, and sports teams.

Promoted Channels: WhatsApp recommends channels based on user interests, and creators and businesses can use this paid tool to boost visibility and grow their audience.

Adverts in Status: Businesses can place targeted promotions within the status feature, allowing users to discover products or services and interact directly with advertisers.

Meta emphasizes that these features prioritize user privacy, maintaining end-to-end encryption for personal messages, calls, and group chats. To deliver relevant ads, WhatsApp uses limited information such as country, language, and user engagement. Meta assures users that it will never sell or share phone numbers with advertisers.

The features will roll out gradually over the coming months. Interested channel administrators and businesses can access more information through official WhatsApp Business resources.
