MTN Group has announced a leadership reshuffle within its West Africa operations, appointing Mohammed Rufai, the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of MTN Nigeria, as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. Rufai will assume his new role on September 1, 2024.
Rufai’s appointment follows the transition of the current MTN Congo-Brazzaville CEO, Ayham Moussa, who will take on the role of Chief Operations Officer (COO) at MTN Nigeria, starting August 19, 2024.
The reshuffling comes as part of broader changes within the Group, including the voluntary early retirement of Djibril Ouattara, the CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, and the departure of MTN Nigeria’s COO, Hassan Jabber.
Rufai, an accomplished professional with over 24 years of experience in ICT and telecoms, joined MTN Nigeria in 2002. His career trajectory includes a significant stint as CTO of MTN Ghana in 2015 and various senior roles across the MTN Group, including Regional CTIO for Southeast Africa and Ghana. He also serves on the Boards of Bayobab (Nigeria) and MTN Benin.
MTN highlighted Rufai’s dedication to execution excellence, people development, and customer experience as key drivers of his success. He holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and has completed advanced management programs at Lagos Business School, Cranfield University, and the University of Cambridge.
Ayham Moussa, who will replace Jabber as COO of MTN Nigeria, has been with MTN since 2002, with a brief hiatus before returning in 2006. His extensive experience spans multiple markets, including Syria and Guinea-Conakry, where he held senior roles such as Chief Information Officer and Chief Technical and Information Officer. Moussa’s leadership in Congo-Brazzaville was marked by significant advancements in technology, including the country’s digital evolution from 2G to 4G, earning MTN Congo recognition as a regional technology leader.
Ralph Mupita, Group President and CEO of MTN, praised the outgoing CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, Djibril Ouattara, for nearly nine years of service, acknowledging his instrumental role in building MTN’s presence in Congo-Brazzaville and leading the turnaround of MTN Côte d’Ivoire. Mupita also expressed gratitude to Hassan Jabber for his 22 years of service to the Group, where he held key roles including CEO in markets such as Sudan, Guinea-Conakry, and Afghanistan.
