PMI, GPM unite to revolutionize global sustainable project management

The Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading authority for project professionals and Green Project Management (GPM) have formed a joint venture to advance sustainable project management.

PMI has acquired a majority stake in the venture, taking ownership of GPM’s assets, including standards, guides, tools, and certifications while GPM retains its research and advisory activities by holding a minority stake that will actively contribute to the venture’s thought leadership and content development.

The new joint venture seizes a crucial moment, driving sustainable development amid evolving regulatory landscapes, thereby enabling project professionals to capitalize on this opportunity to create positive impact, particularly since projects aligned with social good are nearly twice as likely to succeed, and addressing a significant gap in current project management practices where only 22% of projects currently meet this standard

Project professionals are uniquely positioned to harness their skills and leadership to embed sustainability into every stage of the project lifecycle — and to lead the way in delivering meaningful, lasting change.

According to Pierre Le Manh, President & CEO of PMI : “We’re placing project professionals at the center of sustainability transformation through this joint venture with GPM. By integrating GPM’s certifications and standards into PMI, we’ll help professionals turn good intentions into measurable action globally, making sustainability practical at the project level and equipping them to lead their own sustainability journeys.”

PMI will integrate GPM’s sustainability-driven certifications, frameworks, and tools into its learning ecosystem, providing professionals with clear guidance to assess, measure, and improve project sustainability performance.

“Sustainability is not a luxury for Africa, it is essential to our growth, resilience, and future. The joint venture empowers project professionals across Africa to lead transformative change, embedding sustainability into every project and unlocking solutions that serve both people and the planet,” says George Asamani, Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, Project Management Institute.

PMI and GPM have built a strong partnership, with PMI offering GPM’s Sustainable Project Management certification course since 2022 and integrating GPM content into PMI Infinity. This new joint venture deepens their impact and advances their shared mission of elevating the world through projects.

“The future of project management must move beyond delivering outputs,” said Joel Carboni, Founder of GPM and a pioneer in sustainable project management. “Projects must play a critical role in generating prosperity, restoring ecosystems, and building more equitable communities. This joint venture brings us closer to making sustainability and regeneration core to the profession.”
